Introduction to the new HSK Level 1

Test Takers

The new HSK Level 1 is designed for learners who have acquired a vocabulary of approximate 150 Chinese characters. They can understand and use some simple Chinese characters and sentences to make easy communication, thus having the ability to continue their Chinese study.

Contents and time of the test

The new HSK Level 1 written test consists of two sections: listening and reading. It is approximate 40 minutes long, including:

  1. Listening (20 questions, about 15 minutes
  2. Reading (20 questions, 17 minutes)

It also includes the 5 minutes for test takers to fill in their personal information and the 3 minutes after the listening part for test takers to write the answers on the answer sheet provided.

In the new HSK Level 1 listening section, each question will be heard twice and each part includes five questions. The questions and the requirements are as follows.

Listening

Part 1 Listen to the phrases and decide whether the pictures are true or false.

Part 2 Listen to the sentences and choose the right pictures.

Part 3 Listen to the dialogues and choose the right pictures.

Part 4 Listen to the sentences and choose the right answers.

In the new HSK Level 1 reading section, each part includes five questions. The questions and the requirements are as follows:

Reading

Part 1 Decide whether the pictures are the correct ones for the words or expression given.

Part 2 Choose the corresponding pictures based on the sentences given.

Part 3 Match the sentences that are closely related in meaning.

Part 4 Choose the right words or expressions to complete the sentences or dialogues.

Test Score

The full score for each of the listening and reading sections in the new HSK Level 1 is 100. The total score is 200 and the minimum score to pass the test is 120.
