Introduction to the new HSK Level 2

Test Takers

The new HSK Level 2 is designed for learners who have acquired a vocabulary of approximately 300 Chinese characters. They can use Chinese to communicate in a simple and direct manner on familiar topics about their daily life, thus having reached a high level of proficiency in elementary Chinese.

Contents and time of the test

The new HSK Level 2 written test consists of two sections: listening and reading. It is approximately 55 minutes long, including:

  1. Listening (35 questions, about 25 minutes)
  2. Reading (25 questions, 20 minutes)

It also includes the 5 minutes for test takers to fill in their personal inforamtion and the 5 minutes in the end of the test to write the answers on the answer sheet provided.

There are four parts altogether in the listening section of the new HSK Level 2. It is comprised of 35 questions with 10 questions for each of the first three parts and 5 questions for Part 4. Each question will be heard twice. The questions and the requirements are as follows:

Listening

Part 1 Listen to the sentences and decide whether the pictures are true or false.

Part 2 Listen to the dialogues and choose the right pictures.

Part 3 Listen to the short dialogues and choose the right answers.

Part 4 Listen to the long dialogues and choose the right answers.

There are four parts altogether in the reading section of the new HSK Level 2. It is comprised of 25 questions with 5 questions for each of the first three parts and 10 questions for Part 4. The questions and the requirements are as follows:

Reading

Part 1Choose the corresponding pictures based on the sentences.

Part 2 Choose the right words or expressions to complete the sentences or dialogues.

Part 3 Decide whether the sentences are true or false based on your understanding.

Part 4 Match the sentences that are closely realted in meaning.

Test Score

The full score for each of the listening and reading sections in the new HSK Level 2 is 100. The total score is 200 and the minimum score to pass the test is 120.
