Introduction to the new HSK Level 3

Test Takers

The new HSK (Level 3) is designed for learners who have acquired a vocabulary of approximate 600 Chinese characters and basic Chinese grammar. They are capable of completing, relatively speaking, complicated communicative tasks in Chinese to serve the needs of their personal lives, thus having the ability to continue their Chinese language study.

Contents and time of the test

The new HSK Level 3 written test consists of three sections: listening, reading and writing. It is approximately 90 minutes long, including:

  1. Listening (40 questions, about 35 minutes)
  2. Reading (30 questions, 25 minutes)
  3. Writing (10 questions, 15 minutes)

It also includes the 5 minutes for test takers to fill in their personal inforamtion and the 5 minutes in the end of the test to write the answers on the answer sheet provided.

In the new HSK Level 3 listening section, each part includes 10 questions and each question will be heard twice. The questions and the requirements are as follows:

Listening

Part 1 Listen to the dialogues and choose the right pictures.

Part 2 Listen to the sentences and decide whether the pictures are true or false.

Part 3 Listen to the short dialogues and choose the right answers.

Part 4 Listen to the long dialogues and choose the right answers.

In the reading section, each part includes 10 questions. The questions and the requirements are as follows:

Reading

Part 1 Match the sentences that are closely related in meaning.

Part 2 Choose the right words or expressions to complete the sentences or dialogues.

Part 3 Read the sentences and choose the right answers.

Writing

Part 1 Arrange the given words into sentences.

Part 2 Write the right Chinese characters according to the Pin Yin.

Test Score

The full score for each of the listening, reading and writing sections in the new HSK Level 3 is 100. The total score is 300 and the minimum score to pass the test is 180.
